Let’s talk Green

In honor of Mercury Retrograde, let’s learn some cool ways to reverse the climate crisis and support healthy oceans and people too. I’ll be sharing info over the next month on projects that help reverse climate change and that Conscious Calendars supports.

Mercury’s color is Green, and it ‘rules’ the constellations of Air and Earth in vedic astrology. Mercury connects us with the lungs and the nervous system of the planet and trees of all types.

Conscious Calendars is supporting a Seattle based organization, Mangrove Action Project – which is global in its impact.

Mangroves are amazing!

Did you know that mangroves sequester more carbon per hectare than any other forest?
They protect coastlines, sea-life, land animals and people along its coasts.
Mangroves provide homes to anemones, brittle stars and sea urchins – and help keep waters clear for healthy coral life.

Carbon Sequestration

Mangroves do more proportionally than any other forest to sequester carbon – up to 5x more per hectare than tropical rainforests. This makes mangrove forests – and their restoration – one of the planet’s best and most important defenses against climate change.

Sustaining Population

Mangroves serve as vital protective and spawning grounds to tropical fisheries worldwide, help mitigate the effects and causes of climate change, and protect coastlines – all vital for sustaining an ever-increasing global population.

Biodiversity

Mangroves provide a unique habitat for both terrestrial and marine organisms. On land they serve as a unique home for animals ranging from bengal tigers, to monkeys, to myriad bird and other species; they also serve as a vital nursery for many fish species, and as a home for other marine dwellers ranging from manatees to mollusks, corals, and crocodiles, making them invaluable to the health and biodiversity of the oceans.

Many threatened and endangered species are native to mangrove forests like manatees, fishing cats, sea turtles, Royal Bengal tigers and are nesting and resting sites for hundreds of bird species.

Disaster Risk-Reduction

The coastlines of the world are where most people live. Mangroves provide enormous protection to tropical coasts from both storms and tsunamis. The more mangroves there are, the better these coasts – and their populations – are protected, and property saved.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Post-Tsunami World

Following the tsunami of December 2004, MAP was one of the first to point to mangrove loss and degradation as a major factor contributing to extensive loss of human lives and property.

Its call to restore the protective greenbelt buffers that healthy mangrove forests provide was heard widely and has been adopted as policy by governments and international institutions alike.

“Mangroves are among the most productive and biologically complex ecosystems on Earth. They cover between roughly 53,000 and 77,000 square miles (138,000 and 200,000 square km) globally, acting as a bridge connecting the land and sea.” Smithsonian Ocean

 

Help Mangroves Survive and Thrive – help the planet reverse climate change

To help restore coastlines and protect the people who live there consider:

– Sharing the curriculum with a teacher, parent or school you know

– Donating to Mangrove Action Project (MAP)

– Buying some art or incredible photography from Mangrove Action Project(50% goes to MAP and 50% to the artist).

– Children’s mangrove art
