Full moon in Sagittarius
Each year, the full moon in Sagittarius is connected to the constellation of teachers, wisdom and Jupiter. The full moon in this spiritually charged fire sign is considered auspicious in Vedic Astrology and is celebrated across the world.
This full moon only happens once a year and is celebrated all over the globe. For Hindus, Jain, Buddhist and Sikh, this is a special day to honor their teachers and those who have shown them the way in their lives. So, many honor their teachers, their parents and their yoga and spiritual lineage on this day. We all are here because someone else helped guide us along the way.
May everyone be my teacher.
Guru Purnima is special full moon each year.
This year the July lunar eclipse lands on an auspicious day called Guru Purnima.
Full moons are usually times of expansion and social activity. This year it has a double flip of energy – making it more intense.
Instead of this full moon being about expansion, it is about dissolving and putting our expectations into ‘the fire’.
TWO patterns of opposites in 2019:
- Moon Ketu: The energy is about retreating and deepening our personal spiritual practices because the Moon is with Ketu (the south node of the moon which asks us to retreat and withdraw from the world). Ketu with the moon will always bring a wonderful spiritual energy to the day and usually can bring insights, but today is a wild one.
- Lunar Eclipse: The second reason the day is about retreating because the Full Moon is eclipsed!
See if you can dissolve your expectations or a need to know something because Ketu is with the moon – which feels like a flip since most full moons ask us to expand. It is not a day to follow intuition, oddly enough, because it is an eclipse day and all is not appearing as it is. Illusion pervades the day.
Teachers guide us
Eclipses always ask of us to know that we are not seeing everything – that all is not revealed. And we can settle in the not-knowing, just for a day.
Isn’t that what teachers give to us? When we cannot see for ourselves, they guide us.
Those who guide us have showed us the way when we didn’t know how. They are the guide posts who have helped us ask the questions and given us the practices or knowledge that have led us to where we are right now.
Guru and the First Chakra
The guru is also connected with the first chakra, muladhara chakra, which is the seat of the vital force which resides in every human being. The first chakra is often connected with Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.
Have you noticed that our great teachers and anyone who sheds light on our path is often one who removes some obstacle? It might be that they make a comment that all of sudden gives you permission or opens a door for you.
We have doors of the mind and doors of life opened for us with great teachers. May you be blessed with great guides and teachers your entire life!
Today is to celebrate those who show us the way. Since what we focus on expands, when we celebrate those who teach us, we expand our inner wisdom and expand the likelihood of receiving more great teachers.
My Teachers
I’m so incredible thankful for all of my teachers from my parents, Thubten Chodron, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the Karmapa who I was lucky to have received blessings from twice while in Tsurphu, Tibet, Harrison Moretz, Pieter Weltevrede and the mystic Harish Johari, Gina Sala, Dennis Flaherty and Gayatri Devi Vasudev, Chakrapani Ullal and more for guiding me all in such a loving way.
