Balance and Harmony is the theme of Mercury Retrograde October 2020
Mercury retrogrades in Libra Oct 14 – Nov 3, 2020 (according to Vedic Astrology).
Some Mercury retrogrades can feel like we loose ground, this Mercury Retrograde will be creating the conditions for you to connect with what brings you harmony and peace.
We all have been feeling the stress of the pandemic, social justice movement, devastating fires, U.S. politics, hurricanes and earthquakes. It is time to create balance in your life.
Balance and harmony are the focus for this Mercury retrograde and the New Moon in October, too.
Mercury retrogrades in Libra – the sign of balance
This is because Mercury will be retrograding in Libra, the constellation of balance. It’s a triple theme of welcoming and actively claiming your life. Equinox on September 22 was about the balance of light and darkness in our lives – to practice ‘even breath’ which gives you an instant calm. The message of sprinkling balance throughout your day is essential and attainable. It’s the theme that Equinox, Mercury retrograde, and the New Moon in October bring.
We are all finally being able to move forward with a global shift during October. It’s a fantastic time to be looking at the end of your year and planning into 2021. Use this month because there will be some other big influences arriving at the end of November (an eclipse and Jupiter changes constellations) that are going to change themes completely. So, use October to gain momentum. You want to be prepared to use this energy that is supporting you in October and help carry it through most of November.
This is a fairly mild Mercury retrograde. Mercury is the planet of balance and nervous system and it is asking each of us to cultivate more balance because Libra is the constellation of balance and harmony and diplomacy – and because our human physiology desperately needs a re-set. Also good news; after October 4, Mars will no longer be retrograding opposite that Mercury, and it will take the intensity off of Mercury.
In general with Mercury retrograde: One thing to watch for in Mercury Retrogrades is that because it is a planet of communication, some people get more chatty or more nervous, or their nervous system becomes more activated. Movement like dance or stretching are great ways to help the energy find expression in your body and being and then lay down with your knees up to welcome calm.

Simple Practice for Balance
I usually share this practice on Equinox because the length of day and night are almost exactly even. The month of October, for all the reasons I mention above, is a great time to cultivate balance and remind yourself that you can recalibrate quickly. Here’s how to practice “even breath’:
Simply take your attention to your breath, and notice your inhale and exhale. On average, your inhale is just one “beat” more or less than the exhale.
Begin counting with your inhale. It can be any ‘beat’ you give it, just use the same ‘beat’ when counting.
Inhale: one, two, three, four, etc
When the breath turns to exhale, count the exhale. Use the same ‘beat’ when counting.
Then, make the inhale and exhale even. It’s your choice – if your inhale was one beat shorter than the exhale, then inhale for just one ‘beat’ more.
You now have an even breath!
Allow your breath to be relaxed. Do not force a short breath or hold your breath. Just relax into the even count. If you need to lengthen both inhale and exhale as you relax, then allow for that.
Try 10 breaths with the Even Breath.
You have just welcomed CALM and BALANCE into your mind and body in just seconds.
Balance can be reclaimed at any point in the day.
Recalibrate often – claim the moment
This is your month to reactivate and recommit to daily routines. Please don’t judge yourself during Mercury Retrograde. It’s actually time to move towards balance. You might notice and learn some new things about ways to reset yourself. If you got you’re your routine, then midday or at the end of the day – you can reset with just a 5 minute reboot.
For example, say perhaps you do really well for a week or two in the month of October. And then Mercury Retrograde comes and you notice that you might have gotten off one part of your routine. This is an opportunity to actually say, “Oh, I can reset.”
“I can reset at noon, at sunset, at the end of my day and create some other form of routine.” Realize that this Mercury retrograde is about resilience and nimbleness.
Mercury Direct Nov 3
After Mercury goes direct, you will then be in the fourth phase of Mercury retrograde. This is the integration phase, where you’re actually integrating what you’ve learned from the previous segments of that particular theme. This is the last Mercury Retrograde of 2020.
