The Annual Orionid Meteor Shower and Debris from Halley’s Comet
What is the Orionid meteor shower?
Halley’s comet orbits the Sun, approximately every 76 years, but we pass through the debris of Halley’s comet every year. The Orionid shower occurs when the Earth passes through the debris of Halley’s comet, which occurs each year in the fall, in October.
“Halley’s Comet was last here in 1986 and will return in 2061. But the Orionids never go away, they’re here every October. ” “Note: These fast-moving meteors occasionally leave persistent trains. The Orionids sometimes produce bright fireballs.” Earthsky.org
How to Watch the Annual Orionid Meteor Shower Peak
Here’s all you need to know about how to watch the Orionid Meteor showers this year.
When to watch: After midnight and into the early morning hours on the night of October 20 and 21st.
The Orionid meteor showers reach their peak on October 21 and 22, 2024. Go to a dark area, where you can see Orion easily.
We are just past the super, full moon, so there will be a bright night sky for this year’s viewing – and it might be harder to view the meteors.
Overall duration: The Orionid meteors occur from Sept 26 through Nov. 22 this year. The more visible time window is from Oct. 2 through Nov. 7.
Orionids
The Orionid meteors are a regular show that returns each year. The visibility of meteors depends on the phase of the moon. This year the moon will be 80% bright and will interfere a bit with visibility. With bright streaks of up to 10 to 20 per hour when the Moon is new. It is still worth the adventure if you have clear skies.
Try blocking the moon out when you are viewing the sky. I hold my hand up or a part of my cozy blanket to help my eyes focus on the part of sky where Orion is.
They are called Orionids because they appear near Orion’s belt.
