What is Luck?
LUCK
Origins of the word Luck
Advantage, Blessing, Break, Fluke, godsend, happiness, health, karma, kismet, luckiness, occasion, opportunity, profit, prosperity, serendipity, smile, stroke, success. triumph, victory, weal, wealth, win, windfall, big break, fortune/fortunateness, good luck, in the cards, lucky break, run of luck, streak of luck
Do any of these words speak to you? Do you use these words in your life at all?
It turns out that believing you are lucky or that something is going to work out actually influences how you approach problems, and the solutions to them.
Research shows that believing you will be lucky affects the outcome (even if it gives you more perseverance to overcome the challenges).
What is Luck From the Point of View of Vedic Astrology?
Sanskrit words used for luck include: Lakshmi or Laxmi the goddess of wealth, fortune, and beauty. Another is Adrushta or Adrsta, representing the invisible and unseen forces or cause behind destiny, fate, and luck.
In Vedic Astrology or Jyotisha, Jupiter is considered one of the planets of luck. Other planets also impact our destiny and luck depending on their positions and combinations of sign, and constellation. This is called Janma Lagna and is part of a complex analysis and interpretation performed by learned Vedic astrologers.
There are certain houses which are connected with purpose and a special form of prosperity. They have to do with cultivating consciousness and the mind.
Additionally, the 9th house in one’s birth chart represents wisdom, luck, good fortune, and karma.
It is said that the 9th house of each chart holds the promise of good fortune.
Some people are born with good luck.
And there are skills and practices that develop the mind which improve success, outcomes and happiness in both Vedic astrology and the research on luck and positive psychology.
Vedic Astrology describes certain domains of consciousness as associated with
grace, fortune, and luck and rules sudden and unexpected gains
Someone who is born with little can apply themselves and develop a world of good fortune – as defined by you. Good fortune and blessings are not necessarily associated with financial wealth. There are other forms of fortune. Happiness and good health are just a few of these forms of good fortune.
For some, living a simple life by the sea with no responsibility and easy work is a form of abundance.
For others, fortune could be having children, grandchildren or living with a community they enjoy. Each person has both purpose and dharma and regions of their consciousness which are associated with freedom, feeling comfortable in their surroundings, and happiness according to Vedic Astrology.
Everyone is given the choice on how they are going to use what they are born with and how they will apply themselves
– anyone can build luck!
LUCK is a learnable skill.
What are the Qualities of Lucky People?
Leading experts in positivity have ascertained that you can practice habits which lead to luck. What is luck after all? One of the most common qualities of luck is being able to identify an opportunity and act on it. There are things you can do to help identify opportunities and to know when to take them.
Lucky people are not set on a fixed way of achieving their goals. This kind of flexibility puts them in situations where they’re more likely to meet and network with new people, according to the research of psychologist and author of The Luck Factor, Dr. Wiseman. They leap at opportunities.
I’ve combined this research and added Principles from Positive Psychology into a course on Building Luck.
The second part of course integrates the wisdom of Vedic Astrology on luck and purpose (dharma) and teaches the principles of consciousness and skills to build more luck. You can learn from Kathleen’s years of studying and applying the research and her knowledge of Vedic Astrology in this course on Luck.
As part of the research included in this class, Kathleen will include Wiseman’s research and how he concluded that Luck is Learnable and she adds another very important principle.
Wiseman worked with hundreds of exceptionally lucky and unlucky people over a ten-year period.
This culminated in him identifying the following 4 principles frequently utilized by lucky people:
Maximising Chance Opportunities
Lucky people are skilled at creating, noticing and acting upon chance opportunities. They do this in various ways, including networking, adopting a relaxed attitude to life and by being open to new experiences.
Listening to Lucky Hunches
Lucky people make effective decisions by listening to their intuition and gut feelings. In addition, they take steps to actively boost their intuitive abilities by, for example, meditating and clearing their mind of other thoughts.
Expecting Good Fortune
Lucky people are certain that the future is going to be full of good fortune. These expectations become self-fulfilling prophecies by helping lucky people persist in the face of failure, and shape their interactions with others in a positive way.
Turning Bad Luck to Good
Kathleen calls this Flipping Fate
Lucky people employ various psychological techniques to cope with, and often even thrive upon, the ill fortune that comes their way. For example, they spontaneously imagine how things could have been worse, do not dwell on the ill fortune, and take control of the situation.
Kathleen teaches you how to develop these skills and adds more Principles from positive psychology research.
You will learn how to integrate these habits into your life and also learn the cosmic principles of Vedic Astrology which understands karma and the foundation of consciousness and happiness.
Are People Who Believe They are Lucky, Luckier?
This might sound hard to believe, but it’s rooted in science. The truth is that yes, believing you’re a lucky person can actually make you luckier. Dr. Wiseman’s study showed that most people who catch lucky breaks believe they’re likely to experience good fortune in the near future.
Lucky People’s success is not from some innate talent, or working really hard, or being exceptionally intelligent
A multi-year study on the common qualities of lucky people, and what is now the field of positive psychology, gathered some keen observations on what these lucky, and it turns out happy people, had in common:
• similar approaches to how they thought about their future
• how they identified chance opportunities and what they did with them
• habits they cultivated
• how they made better decisions
• how some of them literally found money regularly and tied the “good find” days to their state of mind or even turned difficult situations into more positive ones.
Luck and Happiness
So, if happiness and luck are directly related, can we make our own luck and increase our happiness? This does not have to do with personality, or extroversion.
Does it have to do with how we see and how we respond to the world? From what I have studied and experienced myself, I am going to say confidently, YES!
Karma Vs Free Will
While there is acknowledgement of cause and effect, the essence of the Buddha’s teaching on karma is that it is manifested from our intention behind an action. Relative to Dr Wiseman’s 4th principal of turning bad luck into good, this can be a strong motivation in observing our state of mind regularly, so that we can choose to create happiness in the moment and the future. Awareness and positive intention can be used to apply free will in response to situations which may not be as ideal as hoped. And may potentially accelerate beneficial outcomes under ideal situations.
Since karma can be complex, and we may not always have control over everything that happens in life, what remains is the opportunity in our school of life to mold and change what we can. Believing is a first step.
