Lunar New Year 2024 Year of The Dragon
The Lunar New Year 2024 is a year of The Dragon, and the year 4721 corresponds to the Gregorian calendar year of 2024.

Lunar New Year is February 10 this year. It is a New Moon in Capricorn on the day of the Year of the Dragon.
Dates of Celebrating Lunar New Year 2024
This year the entire month of Lunar New Year from preparation to full celebration spans from January 26 – February 24.
Lunar New Year is celebrated for an entire month. The preparation starts 2 weeks before the new moon, and the public celebration is actually at the full moon, after Lunar New year begins. Family and friends gather for the New Moon celebration in their homes. It is a huge exodus in Asia.
The week before the Lunar New Year is a time of Preparation for the NEW energy. With the lunar light getting thinner, it’s time to clear things out and simplify.
Preparations begin with a full moon in the previous month, and continue for two weeks preparation. Then after the New Moon and Lunar New Year, celebrations last for two weeks until the Full Moon.
New Theme Shift From Fire to Earth
According to Vedic Astrology and Kathleen Whalen’s Monthly Vedic Astro Forecast the theme of January’s Fire shifts into one of the Earth element because there will be predominance of planets in Earth sign- Capricorn.
Our daily mindset and experience is set by the rhythm of the Moon in Vedic Astrology. There will be a shift in energy between the 5th of February and February 10th. When Mars brings in a new theme of Earth.
We get a complete shift in energy because after February 5th, we move into Capricorn and the element of earth. So we are moving from fire in January, which is all about purpose, to earth, which is how do we make this, these ideas and connecting that with our heart and purpose? How do we make it real? Earth is about let’s do this. Let’s make it in the world. What do you do when you take clay, add water? Put it on a spinning wheel or just hand pinch it. You are literally making substance in the world.
On February 6th, the Sun, Mercury, and Mars in the earth sign of Capricorn. Capricorn is a movable Earth sign.
By February 8th, the Moon joins Capricorn for two days. So that will increase Earth energy which is about taking action and getting work finished. This is where the rubber meets the road. You’ll actually be encouraged to be in action, building, creating, and improving your physical health.
By the middle of February, Sun, Mercury, Pluto, Mars, Venus will all in Capricorn in Vedic astrology. Because Capricorn is the natural 10th sign of work, we’re going to be very focused on pragmatic work, getting things done. And so I call it No Frills February! Celebrate Lunar New Year AND get to work while improving your physical health.
Mars in Exaltation
Mars orbits the sun two years at a time. One time every two years, Mars goes into what we call exaltation. Mars in the constellation of Capricorn has this ability to make things real, and to quote from David Frawley: ‘Mars is the planet of energy.’ Mars being exalted at the time of Year of the Dragon beginning heralds that yoga and discipline is an important ingredient to the year.
Make commitments to your health and health routines (not necessarily just fitness, but spiritual practices which might also have a positive effect on health like yoga, qi gong, and walking).
Lunar New Year 2024 Dragon Energy
For this first quarter through the end of April, Jupiter is in Aries and there is a theme of dragon energy. Dragon energy is fiery. Jupiter is a planet of wisdom allowing resilience, access to inner wisdom, and clarity. Also advocacy because of its special connection with Mars in January.
In particular, people who are born in the year of the dragon will actually feel a little more support and stability as it shines good luck on Ares, Leo, Sagittarius, Gemini, and also Capricorn in the Vedic system. Jupiter will always stabilize an area and sometimes open opportunities.
If you’re a monkey, a rat, or a dragon, this energy also supports you. You might have different ascendant and, different houses that are strong, from the Jupiter and Aries, but you might end up feeling support because you’re a rat or a monkey. This “year” also supports those born in Year of the Horse a little bit because Horses are land dragons.
Special Exchange between Jupiter and Mars through Feb 5
Jupiter in Aries, also yields a special ‘exchange Yoga of planets’ with Mars, which is in Sagittarius through February 5th. This exchange or yoga brings all of us access to clarity with our action, new leadership skills, vision, time management, and task completion.
Lunar New Year 2024 – Three Things To Do To Prepare
In the two weeks before the New Moon of Lunar New Year from January 26 – February 9, try these actions:
1. Prune
Cut your hair and nails this week so that the growth cycle of the moon can help your hair and nails be full and healthy. If you have trees or bushes that need pruning, and it’s the right time of year for them to be cut-back, then prune them before the new moon
2. New Clothes
Buy a new set of clothes or a new pair of shoes to wear on the First Lunar Day after the New Moon. Your first “step” into the world can be celebrated. To save money, you can try a new combination of clothes and dress up for that first lunar day, even if you are just running errands
3. Shed
Get rid of something that is important to you, but you know it is time to let it go. Donate coats or clothes that could be useful, but that you really have not worn in ages. (This is actually a special tip related to Saturn in Vedic Astrology. Giving to the elderly is a practice to reduce Saturn’s affects and honor those older than us.
Focus on One Thing to Accomplish Before a Lunar New Year New Moon
Here are some more things that can be done before a Lunar New Year:
- Organize an area of your home, office or clear out a portion of the garage.
- Other important practices completed before the Lunar New Year are to pay off debts or personal loans. If you can’t pull that off during the prior week, then send a thank you note to a person who has helped you.
- Make a plan for the year on how to get out of that credit card debt or get rid of one of those debts.
- Return borrowed items and include a bundle of tangerines or satsumas, ideally still connected with the stem.
Then get ready to celebrate for two weeks after the New Moon from February 10 – February 24
The celebration starts with an intimate dinner with family on February 9 or 10. Dinner usually includes symbols of longevity, health, abundance and healthy relationships.The special meal and celebration with family is aligned action with the energy of the Moon.
Important actions are to STEP out into the world wearing some new clothes on the 1st lunar day of the New Year which is February 10, 2024 this year. If you do not have new clothes, then you can simply wear all clean clothes as you step out into the world on Saturday, February 10, 2024 with the Year of the Dragon!
As the lunar light builds, then people reach out from the inner circle of dinner with family on Lunar New Year itself to more public celebrations with dinner with friends and community and parades. The full moon two weeks after Lunar New Year is the culmination of the energy which marks a New Year for more than 20% of the world’s population.
After the big family gathering which is like Christmas or Thanksgiving in the United States, the celebration continues rippling out into the community, with friends and businesses culminating in parades and fireworks on the full Moon.
This year the full moon which is 2 weeks after the Lunar New Year is February 24. The full moon is in Leo according to Vedic Astrology on this Dragon New Year.

How to know when Lunar New Year Begins according to the Lunar Calendar
Lunar New Year always begins two new moons after December solstice, and begins on the First lunar day of the next moon cycle. That’s why it changes dates according to the Gregorian Calendar. This year, the first lunar day is on February 10th.
