EQUINOX – A TIME OF BALANCE
Equinox is the mid-point in our year. It is the mark which lands between the two solstices of the longest day and shortest day of the year. It is a day we notice that the hours of light and darkness are almost equal. And so balance becomes the focus of our month for aligned conscious living!
Equinox is half way between winter and summer…or half-way between summer and winter (in the s. hemisphere).
It is after all, the 24 hours when the time of light and dark are equal in the day. It is all about balance.
So the mid-mark between seasons is an opportunity to get ready for growth and expansion in the northern hemisphere or for celebrating the harvest and the end of summer while building immunity and gathering forces to ready for the winter.
HEALTH TIPS FOR BALANCE AROUND THE WORLD AROUND EQUINOX
Equinox in northern hemisphere:
March is a detox and clarity month which overlaps nicely with the steadiness the Green Days provide this month. Especially now, with the waning moon.
Equinox in Southern hemisphere:
March is time to celebrate the bounty of summer and of the harvest season and build immunity.
We’ll be sharing some great health tips over the next couple of days for you so that no matter where you are in the world, you can help attune your body to the rhythms of the Equinox.
In addition to implementing some of the ideas now, you might want to copy and paste them into a file for future use or print out and post these healthy boost ideas in your home and workplace.
March 20th is the Equinox.
1. Daily Detox: Keep it simple
The Simplest Cleanse to Kick Start the new you
Did you know that drinking warm water with lime in it – first thing in the morning will jump-start your digestive system and help detoxify your liver at the same time?
Drink a glass of warm water with either lime or lemon juice FIRST thing in the morning. This opens the digestion, fosters elimination, and clears the GI gastro-intestinal) tract.
NOTE: Fresh lime juice is used in Ayurveda (the healing system of India) because it does not promote mucous production, like lemon can.
Lemon is known world-wide to help stimulate the liver and digestion and help it clear.
Try whichever juice feels good to you and make sure to drink clear water after the lemon or lime water, since the acid in the drink can eat at enamel if you do not drink plain water or food after drinking the lemon or lime water.
No big diets, so special powders, just a slice of lime in warm water will help your body efficiently eliminate what it is meant to.
Now that is the kind of cleanse that is easy to do year round.
2. Try a simple liver cleanse in March by increasing bitter greens in your salads or steaming more greens for dinner, like dandelion greens (available at most health markets), arugula, or mustard greens. Dandelion has long been used in Europe and Asia to clear and foster liver health. You might try some sweeter cooked beets or grated carrot or red bell pepper in your salad to offset the bitter and balance it all with some healthy fat like avocado, olive tapenade or just plain olive oil. 3. Juicing vegetables of all kinds gives the body more buoyancy in the spring season to fill and build toward the warmer summer months. Hydrate deeply by drinking freshly squeezed juice of any kind – juiced at home is best, and store bought organic is next best.
Equinox Southern hemisphere
Celebrate the bounty of summer and of the harvest season and build immunity.
1. It is easy to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables this time of year. As you literally harvest from the market and buy in bulk or harvest the garden – look to preserving some of the foods in oil rather than dehydrate them this year. The indications of Venus in Pisces call for a new approach this year if you happen to dehydrate food – look to preserve in oil or vinegars and keep it liquid instead of dry. It will give you better health over the winter.
2. Eat fresh local or shiitake mushrooms to build immunity. In Chinese medicine, this is the time of year (for you) where March and April will call upon you to release heat from the body by eating cooling foods like celery, cucumber and high water foods. The big thing to do right now is build RESILIENCE in your system and all fresh, local mushrooms will help with that, but fresh shiitake mushrooms in particular are used in these two months to build your immune system for the winter. Classic organic white or brown crimini mushrooms are great standard mushrooms to eat in soups and stir fries and have been proven to help reduce chances of Cancer. If you area is too dry for forest or desert harvest, then looks into getting a mushroom log and grow your own angel wing mushrooms (Pleurocybella porrigens) or shiitakes.
